Dan Hussain

Dan Hussain is Founder and President of invention capital firm American Pioneer Ventures and patent law firm American Patent Agency, with offices in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Florida.  Dan currently serves as a consultant to one of his portfolio companies Pioneer Energy, and previously served as President of KD Secure, a company he co-founded with an MIT professor, which developed unique products and patents related to the industrial internet.  Dan is an inventor or co-inventor on over 20 U.S. and international patents, and many more pending.  Dan is currently pursuing a PhD, part-time, in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University related to his work with Pioneer Energy.  Dan is a new member of the Industrial Internet Consortium, an organization devoted to the next wave of industrial computing called the Industrial Internet.

Education

Mr. Hussain was educated at MIT in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and computer science, and also studied internet and intellectual property law at Harvard and theoretical geophysics at the University of Cambridge (UK). Mr. Hussain ultimately graduated with a degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from MIT. Mr. Hussain won the Siemens Westinghouse National Science Award, a national award given to one team in the United States for engineering excellence. According to Science Magazine, this is a junior Nobel Prize. He worked on applying biological evolutionary theories to finding efficient hashing functions for unstructured data sets. While at Cambridge University, Mr. Hussain worked with Prof. Herbert Huppert, studying dendritic solidification and fractal growth in chambers at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University, UK.

Professional Experience

Mr. Hussain worked for NASA, at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD on techniques for sending satellite image data to mobile devices. At NASA Headquarters, Mr. Hussain worked with Dr. Rich Williams, Chief Health and Medical Officer and the Office of Exploration Systems Mission Directorate on policy analysis of assisted reproduction insurance coverage for the NASA Astronaut Corps. Mr. Hussain did research in astronomy and astrophysics at the Dearborn Astronomical Observatory in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Mr. Hussain analyzed satellite images from Germany’s X-Ray satellite ROSAT, which produced an all-sky survey in X-Ray spectrum.Mr. Hussain worked for Siemens Corporation in the Siemens Corporate Research division developing techniques for 3D image registration of 3D image data from Siemens’ latest 3D image sensor.

Mr. Hussain later worked for the law firm Frommer, Lawrence, and Haug, LLP, a New York patent boutique firm, where he obtained patents for companies such as Siemens, Sony, and other international companies. He also assisted with patent litigation for patent holding companies, including Rembrandt Management Group. Mr. Hussain passed the Bar Exam for the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2006, becoming a Registered Patent Agent (Registration No. 59,026).

Personal Story

Dan has contributed to the community by teaching science and math to high school students in Johnstown, PA and Cambridge, MA. He has also mentored high school science projects, including a Regional Finalist in the Siemens Westinghouse Competition from Johnstown, PA.

Dan is a Third Culture Kid (TCK), having grown up in a diverse culture background, being born in Moscow, Russia to Svetlana Hussain, whose family traces its roots to Russia, and Dr. Anwar Hussain, M.D., whose family traces its roots to Bangladesh. Dan came to the United States with his parents and younger sibling at the age of 7, where his father did his residency in Memorial Hospital. He was educated in New York City‘s public elementary schools, and attended high school for three years in Wilmette, IL where his father completed his cardiology fellowship in Chicago. Dan finished his senior year of high school at Richland Senior High School in Johnstown, PA, where his father started in private practice. Dan is most thankful to his mother, father, and grandmother for giving him the opportunities throughout his life for a fine education and their love and support.

Dan currently lives between Cambridge, MA and Pittsburgh, PA and enjoys sailing on the Charles River. He continues his interest in astrophysics and space exploration through his participation in the International Mars Society, of which he was a Founding Member, as well as a donor to Explore Mars.
